June 28, 2024 - Aron Sousa, MD

Selfie of Dean Sousa at the Board of Trustees retreat in Flint.

This week, we welcomed the Michigan State University Board of Trustees, the president, and university leadership to Flint and our Flint Campus building. As you might expect for a campus dedicated to faculty and student community engagement, the highlights of the day were all about the students, community, and faculty.

For those of you who do not know the history of our work in Flint, indulge me a smidge or a paragraph. MSU has been in Flint for a century, and the college has educated clinical students in Flint since the early 1970s. During the Michigan tidal wave of medical school expansion in the late noughties and early teens of this century, leaders in Flint considered expanding to a complete medical school in Flint. In the end, it turned out that expanding our clinical class in Flint, centering the MPH program in Flint, and creating a public health research unit in Flint was a more practical endeavor.

Thursday morning, I had the chance to introduce our team and their work to the president and the board. I started with this framework: our successes in Flint are due to the intelligence, expertise, talent and hard work of the people of Flint, who are our colleagues, collaborators, and compatriots. And, this is not hyperbole. Our community partners are co-PIs on center grants and R01’s, co-chaired the search for our founding chair, and sit on our search committees. The people of Flint are our superpower and our unfair competitive advantage.

And that was what the board saw this week. Our public health department is the only unit we can find that integrates of community participatory approach throughout the decisions, activity, and history of the department. This is what we imagined from the beginning, but it is more successful than we ever dared hope. Our Flint clinical campus, with its two certificates, remains highly sought after by our students, and the MPH is now accredited by CEPH and has graduated more than 700 public health professionals. The research unit developed into the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health. You know about their work during the Flint water crisis, their remarkable grants , and national innovations like the fruit and vegetable prescription program and Rx Kids . You can catch up on the work with our Flint colleagues and collaborators in this MSU Today Collection .

During the Thursday breakfast session, to which students were invited, a small group of our students came in to ask the university to support students from the Middle East and North Africa, to divest from companies supporting the incursion in Gaza, and that we find a way to help medical students from Gaza continue their education. They were polite, impassioned advocates who spoke up, and then they left us to the rest of our work.

As the students said to us, the situation for civilians and health care workers in Gaza is deadly, and I am sure all in that room want to help those in need in Gaza and elsewhere. As health care providers, we feel a special kinship for physicians, nurses, and all who provide for the sick and injured in war torn areas like Gaza. Our professions confront this need and danger in too many places around the world. The university is working to provide support for students with families and loved ones in harm’s way. It feels paltry to again link to our resources, yet they are useful and available to students, faculty, and staff . Some of these issues are beyond the scope of a college, but I am in contact with one of our national organizations about what might be done to help medical students from Gaza, which has been an area of discussions among deans.

The board retreat and visit were a remarkable success, and I must thank everyone who put so much work into the sessions we held for the board. There are too many people to list here across staff, students, and faculty. The talent and teamwork across our Flint units, the dean’s office,  and the operations, security, communications, and facilities teams were excellent and noticed. Thank you so very much!

Early Thursday morning, the state budget passed. I have not sorted through all its implications for the university, but there is good support for four specific college programs:

  • The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program , which provides $15 prescriptions for fresh produce to pediatric and prenatal patients in Flint, received $500k in support of the work of the program and the team of Dr. Amy Saxe-Custack in the Pediatric Public Health Initiative (PPHI) .
  • The MICARES program, which helps train students, nurses, and physicians in the care of addiction got its first line-item support in the budget. Dr. Cara Poland and her team will use the $1.5M to expand services and education in Michigan.
  • The MIDOCS program is a collaboration of several medical schools to support residency training in underserved communities. We use the residency slots to train psychiatrists in and for rural communities using MSU and Pine Rest as base programs with rural training sites in Marquette and Traverse City. We also have rural family medicine residents based in Midland who finish their training in Alpena. The state has increased MIDOCS from 24 residency slots to 32, which is more than expected. My thanks to Mark Brieve and Jerry Kooiman for their advocacy for this important program, which has already increased the number of psychiatrists in the UP by 30%.
  • And, Rx Kids, the PPHI anti-poverty program addressing the first year of a child’s life, was awarded $20M in matching funding for the next expansion of Rx Kids to new communities in the state. As you all know, Mona Hanna, MD (’02) is the director and founder of Rx Kids.

Across the college our people advocate for programs and changes in the hope of making the world a better, healthier place. So be it

Serving the people with you,

Alex Maddox, CFAES IGP Coordinator

The CFAES Office for Research & Graduate Education is pleased to announce the FY 2025 Internal Grants Program Request for Proposals is now available. Keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks and be sure to review the RFP and application templates for the full list of proposal requirements. Note that student competitions will be released later in the summer.

New Researcher Incentive Program (maximum of $75,000 per award)

  • Objective: CFAES recognizes that many new researchers have the interest and ability to develop innovative and robust research programs that can generate preliminary data needed to secure externally funded sponsored projects. The New Researcher Incentive Program aims to fund new, innovative research to generate that preliminary data.
  • Eligibility: Principal Investigators must be in a tenure-eligible position, research scientists, or postdoctoral researchers in an academic unit or program within CFAES. New Researchers must also have been employed at OSU for less than six years in their current position and have PI status approval from the Office of Research. Adjunct or Emeritus faculty are not eligible. Positions designated as limited or Co-PI status by the Office of Research are not eligible.

Immediate Needs Program (maximum of $75,000 per award)

  • Objective: CFAES recognizes the high potential to address immediate needs areas that are critical to our stakeholders and society. The Immediate Needs program provides funding to address critical needs by exploring new areas of research that CFAES does not currently address and/or applied research that directly supports CFAES stakeholders. The program will also consider funding projects that provide researchers and teams the resources to learn or develop new techniques or approaches that will position CFAES to better serve stakeholders or make faculty more competitive for future funding opportunities.
  • Eligibility: All CFAES researchers with Principal Investigator status are eligible to submit a proposal (except adjunct and emeritus faculty). Proposals must be submitted by a group (2 or more) of investigators. Investigators (both lead and Co-PI) may be from the same academic unit, but not the same lab.

Deadline: Due 10/2/24 by 5:00 p.m. Please submit online via the CFAES-R&GE Internal Grants Submission Portal .

Additional Information Interested in learning more about IGP? Please direct all questions to Alexandria Maddox at [email protected] or visit go.osu.edu/fy24-igp for more information.

Payroll Accounting Adjustments Update Beginning July 1, 2024, to align with federal guidance, payroll accounting adjustments (PAAs) will no longer be processed for past certification periods. This means that:

  • Once certified, effort will be considered final.
  • Salary cost transfers must either be processed prior to issuance of effort certification documents or corrected during the certification process. If effort for a past period isn’t certified, it is an unallowable cost.

PAAs submitted after certification and PAAs adjusting effort that occurred before the most recent certification period will be denied and uncertified effort will be billed back to the investigator’s department, consistent with processes for all unallowable expenditures.

Ask Questions: PAA Office Hours Leadership from the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge will hold virtual office hours and provide a short overview of the change as well as answer questions Fridays on the following dates from 9 - 9:45 AM: July 5, July 12, July 19, and July 26.

Add the sessions to your calendar and  receive the link to join .

It is  possible that you might still be able to apply for admission to the Faculty of Commerce at MSU Vadodara with your OBC certificate, even without a non-creamy layer (NCL) certificate at this time. Check the Faculty of Commerce website for admission guidelines or FAQs. They might have information on the NCL certificate requirement and the process for submitting it later. Call or email the Faculty of Commerce admissions office. They can provide the most up-to-date information on the NCL certificate requirement for OBC candidates and the procedure for submitting it later if allowed. https://www.careers360.com/university/maharaja-sayajirao-university-of-baroda-vadodara I hope it helps!

Hello sir.I have a question.can I get admission in MSU b.pharma through jee mains score (75%) 2024.

If you are asking about Michigan State University then the answer is no. Michigan state university is located in United States and it doesn't give admission for the students based on JEE Main scores. JEE Main scores are used for admissions to engineering and architecture programs in India, not for admissions to universities in United States.

To get admission in MSU for B.Pharma you need to fulfill the requirements set by the University. You should take some tests such as SAT, ACT , English proficiency tests like TOFEL, IELTS.

Does msu accepts nios result ?

NIOS is an accredited Indian educational board offering distance learning programs for secondary and senior secondary levels. NIOS certification is accepted for higher education in India, including universities and colleges. MSU, a renowned university in India, is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

I hope this answers your question.

How Many Backlogs are allowed?

According to Maharaja Sayajirao, the University of Baroda (MSU Baroda) allows a maximum of 2 ATKT (Allowed To Keep Terms) at the end of the year for a student to be in good academic standing. Here’s a breakdown of what this means:

Important Considerations:

  • Consequences of Exceeding Limit: If a student has more than 2 ATKTs at the end of the year, they might face consequences like having to repeat the year.
  • First-Year ATKTs: ATKTs from the first year pending in the second year might prevent a student from progressing to the third year.

There are high cut off in the university something like 85+ percentage in 12th for bachelors. There is 10% reservation according to government rules. Internal exams is for 1 hours or externals is for 1 hours too. I'm not sure about it because gujarat government is changed rules.

  • May be they can improve their management of university

They can apply from gcas portal and there application fees are nominal like 300 to 350 they provide reservation benifits anyone can apply who passed 12th standard there is no any entrance exams for Bcom course in other departments there is entrance tests too

A Review on MSU engineering college Vadodara

  • As exams are hard minimum criteria for cgpa is hard to maintain but 80 percent is placed and averagepackage is around 5.5 - 6
  • The cleanliness in the campus can be improved and there should be equipments related to fire safety and exit and assembly points
  • The course can be improved and they are already working on it

I went through the D2D route and the cutoff was around 1300 but the msu diploma students only get 1 seat and the rest of the seats are reserved for gtu diploma students coming to msu The jee students cut off was also not much high but was not too low as well The reserved categories will easily get admission if you have good ranks

Journey of FMS, Best college Life Review

  • Perfect faculty to enjoy your college life
  • Events by Faculty for the fun event of student

84+ Percentile will be sweet spot for sfi seat and 89+ for gia ones. Finance exam will be tough which are set by Dr. Pandya sir as there's a massive difference in the level of exam and time for studies

MSU is good if you can keep up for yourself

  • MSU campus really gives the dream, medieval and serene vibes. The campus is very much wide. I'm from faculty of arts.
  • I'm in third year of bachelor's at the psychology department. It has in house internship and also one of the rare collges that allows for the student to choose a specialisation paper from third year onwards (obviously depending upon marks)
  • The classes are cancelled often but for psychology department , it's okayish.
  • For a reputed university, the academic pattern is a bit outdated.

The minimum percentage is 55. But for some faculties, the cut off is very high like my department. The application form is available at the university's website of rupees 300. The portal opens during the end of an yearly semester (around April -June). There are reservations for SC, ST and OBC (Gujarat obc). There might also be concessions for some special cases too. The admission process is quite hectic. It has around like 3 rounds. The cut offs are not released properly either.

Environmental Studies in MSU Baroda

  • Good faculty and experienced teachers. Labs are efficient and well equipped.
  • Good college crowd and memory making place. Nice people and nice canteen services in the premises with a mix of old and new architecture.
  • College politics and elections. I was never a big fan of politics but people who were there seem to enjoy it

Eligibility of the course is minimum 50% in 12th and 10th grade along with atleast 5 CGPA in Bachelor's degree and the admission process is through a simple MCQ based exam with questions pertaining to the environment science subject. Since I fall in general category I do not know about any other benefits to other categories.

  • good culture, many activities and good placement, great facilities
  • some what bookish teaching pattern, some upgradation need to be done

the application is been filled on there site and there will be display of merit list and if your name is in the merit list in a week it will be reflected on your online application and pay fees option will be opened

Overall review and experience about hostel and college life of MSU

  • MSU is a very good college. When I was applying for admission here, I learned a lot of things, and the faculties here are also very good at teaching. The food and drink here are also very good, and the hostel facilities here are quite good too.
  • This college is quite affordable for foreigners as well, and people from all over the world come here to study. There are a variety of cultures available here, and all festivals are celebrated, from those of the North to those of the South. The food
  • The food and other facilities in the girls' hostel are not that good; sometimes, girls experience stomachaches and other discomforts. There are not many facilities, and the rooms are quite dirty. They can't even stay with fine ar students in the coll
  • Here, you have to take exams seriously, or else you end up with a lot of backlogs. If you don't study well and forget to admit yourself in time for the exam, they don't allow you to take the exam directly. There is a lot of politics here because it's

For certain courses at MSU, you need to take entrance exams. Only after clearing the exam are you eligible for admission. For instance, admission to Fine Arts is based on percentage, while for BBA, admission is granted after clearing the entrance exam.

Disha dodiya

MS University Baroda : The Ultimate Guide.

  • I really like the professors of my despartment
  • The current syllabus that we have is really interesting
  • The strength of the class is really big which sometimes do create problems
  • I see lack of opportunities as compared to other prestigious universities and colleges

The application process was smooth. We had to first fill one online registration form. And then we were asked to be present at the university on a specific date with all the required documents. The admission process is though a long process but it went smoothly. However, the only thing I want to change is that there should be some way to do the admissions online as well because sometimes people come from all over the country and it gets difficult to do so for them.

Arhana Bordoloi

diy ( campus life, internship, placement, study)mistry

  • air conditioning in computer practical labs
  • enough seating desks in class so can sit comfortably
  • no air conditioning in class gets really hot during summers
  • only some faculty member and teacher are good at teaching but some are not

you can apply for this course after completing your 12th grafe or diploma. the cutoff depends on the overall performance of the passed out students of that year. there is official website of msu where you can find the admission portal and fill your form then youll recive mails about all further details.

MSU Baroda: 11 Answered Questions

  • It has a huge campus, one of the largest in India.
  • Their science faculty is the oldest in the country.
  • It gives a huge exposure to arts graduates.
  • Elections are the major part of this university.
  • There are two major libraries in MSU Baroda, one is Memorial situated at the computer center in MSU and the other is Hansa Mehta. The former is for the juniors and the latter for seniors.

The placements here are good, with some of the top companies taking part in the placement program like Godrej, Amazon, Wipro and IBM.

I live in Vadodara. Which is better MSU or DDU Nadiad for computers?

Sakshi Gupta

One of my friends studied in DDU and after gathering some information online, I can give you a proper comparison. Analyzing this you will be able to make your decision.

  • DDU has an edge over MSU, when comparing CSE departments.
  • MSU's programming events at their annual technical festival, FootPrints, was also disappointing.
  • They use outdated equipment in their labs and the overall competition was not as good as DDU.
  • The Computer Engineering course of DDU has programming languages and technologies early on in the 4 year duration and core CS theory subjects after, unlike MSU.
  • Java is taught in DDU in the 3rd sem but in MSU, it comes in the 6th.
  • Web technologies are introduced in DDU in the 4th sem unlike MSU .If you choose DDU, expect lots of exams and strict rules.
  • FootPrints at MSU happen at a much larger scale than DDU's Felicific.
  • The DDU schedule will keep you busy and focussing less on extracurricular activities.
  • MSU hostels have received a lot of student complaints. In comparison, DDU's hostel is more comforting.
Course Fee INR 6.08 lakh INR 6,000
Highest CTC 10 LPA 8 LPA
Average CTC 6 LPA 3.5 LPA
Recruiting Companies TCS, Infosys, Crest Data Systems, etc. TCS, Wipro, Infosys, etc.

It is suggested that you go for DDU instead of MSU. But finally it is your choice. Choose the one that meets your needs and requirements, as it will be easier to blend in.

What are the college timings of MSU Baroda?

Yatika Mehla

The college timings of MSU Baroda depend upon which faculty you are in as every department has its own timings.

  • First Year: 3-6 PM for theory and 7-10 AM  for the lab.
  • Second year:  Students get 2 lab sessions, one in the morning 7 am to 10 am,  and the other in the afternoon 3-6 PM . The theory lectures are held between 10 am to 3 pm.
  • Third Year: 2 lab sessions are held. One between 7-10 AM  and the other between 3-6 PM.

Theory lectures are held between 11 to 2:30.

M.Sc  – You need to be present from 8 am  to 6 pm in the evening or complete lab experiments early and leave by 2 or 3 pm.

How is MSU Baroda for girls?

MSU Baroda is a decent college for girls. All the departments have many girls. Some faculties like Home Science are predominantly all girls. The faculty of Commerce which is the largest faculty at MSU has a separate unit for only girls.

The best feature of MSU is that although a girl student can get admission to another co-ed unit of the faculty, they also have the option to study in a girls-only unit. Hence MSU is perfectly safe for girls.

In fact, to keep girls in the limelight in all areas, the post of vice president in student union elections is reserved for girls only.

Candidates who want to pursue BCA from MSU Baroda can apply online with the required information. Eligible candidates need to appear for the entrance test conducted by the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Admission is based on the marks obtained in the entrance test.

Admission to the B. Com (Honors) is done on the basis of the merit of the aggregate marks secured by students in 12th (H.S.S.C.) Examination.

So, B.Com does not require any specific entrance exam while BCA does.

Is MSU Baroda good for a BBA, or should I go for other options?

Sunil Kumar D

Your decision actually depends on the fact if you want to pursue BBA or you want to study at MSU. This is because if your sole interest is in BBA then trust me there are many better colleges for it. But if you are adamant about studying at MSU, then it’s better you search for your own interests.

I will recommend you take the aptitude test which is free in the psychology department. This test will let you decide what to study. Don’t be a part of the herd and pursue what others are pursuing. Rather follow your own interest that you will not regret later.

What are the best student organizations or clubs to join at MSU Baroda? Why should students join them?

Jasmine Grover

Before deciding which student organization to join you should be aware of the benefits of participating in one.

  • Overall development
  • You can enhance your skills with the organizational setup which you have got.
  • Making new friends
  • Learning extra things
  • Memories of the activities you do here
  • These organizations bring out the best talents within you

Some of the best student organizations at MSU Baroda are

Political

  • VVS Vidyarthi Vikas Sangh
  • ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) NSUI ( National Students Union of India) Hostel committee.
  • Training & placement cell.
  • Student union of the university (i.e UGS, VP, FR)
  • Prerna is a social event that is held annually
  • Vivekanand Kendra

Entertainment

  • BBA Baazigar

All along with choosing an appropriate student organization don’t forget that all these are just part-time activities. Don’t forget your primary goal to study.

How is MSU Baroda for doing a BSc in Physics?

Aastha Shrimali

The BSc course in Physics at MSU Baroda is at par with the top institutes like IISERs and IITs.

The infrastructure is the best in the whole of Gujarat state. The faculty for this course however is a bit lacking in comparison to other courses. Some are not skilled enough while some are not interested in teaching at all.

The laboratories are decked with decent equipments but during the First and Second years, they are almost of no use. The third year has a lot of lab sessions that should not be missed

The theoretical exams are pretty easy as most of the questions are based on what has been taught in the class.

MSU has 2 major libraries ( SSMT and SHMT) that have a wide range of books on almost every subject.

Research is mainly conducted in areas of condensed matter, Spectroscopy, X Ray diffraction and Nuclear Physics. Seminars and conferences are held throughout the year on campus.

My opinion is that MSU is not much of a good choice for a BSc in Physics, especially if you are coming from a state other than Gujarat.
