Importantly, much of our research is focused on health disparity populations with the long-term goal of informing health policy and clinical practice across the lifespan.

Columbia Nursing provides three years (eight semesters) of funding for tuition, related fees, health insurance, and a stipend for full-time PhD students.

Program Design

Our PhD program provides students with an understanding of the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of nursing science and a strong foundation in research methods (design, statistics, measurement, quantitative and qualitative methods) for clinical, translational and health services research. All students are mentored by research advisors with active programs of research as they move toward independent research and assume the roles of doctorally prepared nurse scientists.

As a Columbia Nursing PhD student, you will learn to:

  • Design, conduct, and report multidisciplinary research studies that increase knowledge to improve the health and well-being of patients and families across the lifespan
  • Advance the state of the science in a substantive area of research through application of innovative and rigorous methods
  • Promote health and well-being for individuals and families in the context of their communities
  • Provide leadership in improving the health care delivery system at local, national, and international levels
  • Collaborate with other professionals to evaluate and develop policies for delivery of health service
  • Translate evidence accumulated through research into practice and policy at multiple levels

As part of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), Columbia Nursing enjoys a unique collaboration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Mailman School of Public Health, and the College of Dental Medicine. CUIMC provides myriad opportunities for interprofessional collaboration in research .

The PhD curriculum builds on the foundation of nursing science by bringing together practice, policy, translational research, and leadership. The core courses provide the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct relevant and well-designed research studies. Electives strengthen an area of clinical interest or intensify understanding of a specific research or analytic method.

Both post-master's and post-BSN students admitted to the program will complete a minimum of 57 credits. The curriculum plan is designed to make it possible to complete the program in three years for those students with clearly defined plans for their dissertation research.

PhD courses are offered in three major areas:

  • Theoretical foundations of nursing science
  • Analytical foundations of nursing science
  • Electives and application

Students must be registered as full-time for the duration of the program (typically three to four years). The minimum number of semester credits in required coursework is 37 (four semesters) for eligibility to progress to the qualifying exam. Six of the 37 credits required to be completed prior to the qualifying examination are elective courses tailored to the student’s dissertation topic and/or dissertation methods. The PhD program requires nine credits of elective courses. A minimum of 57 total credits is required for program completion.

Qualifying Examination

The qualifying examination helped me to combine the content I learned in my courses and my research interests so I could further articulate my research question. Performing a scoping review on my topic of interest immersed me in the current literature and was crucial to the development of my dissertation. This experience prepared me to successfully work independently through the rest of my Ph.D.

 Kylie Dougherty, BSN, RN, M.Phil.

In addition to coursework, students must successfully complete a qualifying examination with written and oral components. The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is awarded after successful completion of the qualifying examination and the student enters doctoral candidacy status.

Dissertation

Students are expected to successfully defend a dissertation reporting original research. Four dissertation credits are required each semester during the dissertation phase of study.

Scholarship Expectations

My advisor and the Columbia Nursing faculty provided me exceptional guidance throughout the PhD program to extend my learning beyond the classroom with the goal of becoming an independent nurse scientist. I learned valuable skills and knowledge to successfully obtain a NIH-funded predoctoral training award, present research findings at local, regional, and national conferences, and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals with good impact factors.

Joseph Belloir, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC

  • Publication: At least one manuscript published in an appropriate peer-reviewed journal.
  • Grantsmanship: At least one grant application submitted to an appropriate funding agency or organization.
  • Presentation: At least one abstract submitted for presentation as a poster or oral presentation at an appropriate professional meeting.
  • Networking: Student will attend at least one regional or national research meeting.

Preparation for Postdoctoral Fellowship: Research Career Next Step

The coursework and research mentoring at Columbia Nursing helped prepare me for the next steps in my education and career post-PhD. In addition to structured coursework and educational seminars, the school provided beneficial informal support and resources. Feedback sessions with both peers and faculty were very helpful in preparing me to present posters and presentations at research conferences. The school also provided funds for travel to conferences where I presented my research. The grant writing workshop and mock reviews of grant applications provided me with tools and feedback needed to successfully apply for additional funding for my research. Finally, interdisciplinary research collaborations with faculty provided me with opportunities to work with researchers from several disciplines to complete my dissertation.

What is it like to be a PhD student at Columbia Nursing?

Required courses (excluding electives).

Building upon the foundations provided in the quantitative and qualitative research method courses, in this course students examine advanced methods and frameworks frequently used in studying health policy, health services research problems and comparative effectiveness research. In addition to a critical review of the methods, the course examines the relationship among science, policy and healthcare delivery, and identifies critical questions shaping the future policy research agenda.

Interdisciplinary research is an approach to advancing scientific knowledge in which researchers from different disciplines work at the borders of those disciplines in order to address complex questions and problems. Successful interdisciplinary efforts require mastery of specific competencies. This seminar will introduce students to competencies in interdisciplinary research through a combination of readings, case studies, and lectures in each necessary aspect, chosen from fields essential to successful interdisciplinary research. It is intended to assist learners to understand why and how different professional disciplines must work together to generate and disseminate knowledge. We will examine: different conceptualizations of interdisciplinary; barriers to and facilitators of interdisciplinary research; approaches, benefits, and limitations of collaboration and team science; methods for measuring interdisciplinary collaboration; the intersection of translational and interdisciplinary scientific strategies; and individual researchers' experiences with and evaluations of their own interdisciplinary scientific projects. Learners will develop a set of skills to be effective members and leaders of interdisciplinary research teams.

The student works with a faculty member or other scientist who is conducting a research project. The specific nature of the experience depends on the nature and stage of the research, but might include search and review of relevant literature, data collection, data analysis and/or grant preparation.

This course is intended for PhD students who are engaged in relevant scholarly activities that are associated with dissertation research.

This foundational course will examine the philosophy of nursing knowledge including foundations of nursing theory, concept development, and its application to research. Students will explore approaches to the analysis and development of concepts and the application of nursing concepts and frameworks to clinical practice and research. Ideas, assumptions, events, people, and writings are examined for their influence, inter-relationships, and significance to nursing. Types of reasoning will be evaluated within the context of nursing and health. Major theories, frameworks, and concepts of nursing and health and their implication for research will be discussed. The focus of the course will be on development of critical thinking skills in analyzing key elements of philosophies, concepts, and conceptual frameworks.

In this foundational course students will study the links between theory and the psychosocial and biophysical measures used in nursing research.  Students will employ the principles of classical test theory and item response theory to evaluate the reliability and validity of measurement.  Application of computational techniques will be covered in the lab portion of the course.  Course topics include types and uses of measures, item/scale development and validation, survey methods, reporting for publication, and the relationships between measurement and research ethics, cultural competency, and health disparities.

This course provides a foundation for quantitative research methods and design. Research process topics examined include: appraisal of the quality of existing evidence; identification of gaps in the literature; formulation of researchable questions and testable hypotheses; types of research variables; sampling designs and power analyses; and the uses, strengths, and weaknesses of various experimental and quasi-experimental research designs.

This course provides an in-depth examination of qualitative study designs and methods through a combination of theoretical discussion and hands-on practical experience. Topics include paradigm distinctions, theoretical perspectives, designs and methods, critique of research reports, and ethical issues in qualitative research.

The course is intended for PhD students who are engaged in relevant scholarly activities that are not associated with the required course sequence. Such activities must accrue more than 20 hours/week.

This course is intended to provide a hands-on introduction to delivering data visualizations to serve as a critical lens through which individual and population level health can be examined. The proposed course will combine concepts and theory in data visualization and exploration and practice to enable the student to gain the necessary knowledge to use graphics and statistics to explore the data, find and construct a narrative, and share findings in ways colleagues and decision-makes can readily understand and act upon.

This course is designed to provide the tools for the doctorally prepared nurse to evaluate, translate and integrate published research results into clinical practice. During the course, students will learn how to conceptualize clinical practice problems and transform them into answerable clinical research questions, how to search for the best clinical evidence, and how to assess clinical evidence using basic epidemiological, biostatistical and scientific principles. The course will culminate in a systematic review or meta-analysis of a body of research relevant to advanced practice nursing.

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements are reviewed individually on a space-available basis.

The Graduate School Application

ALL applicants are required to complete the  Graduate School online application .

The University of Kentucky Graduate School is now part of the Hobson’s ApplyYourself Application Network, a system used by more than 700 colleges and universities that provides the opportunity to submit all application requirements via an online system. This includes an electronic process for letters of recommendation and uploading copies of unofficial transcripts. The system allows candidates to monitor their application status and view receipt of supplemental materials.

A non-refundable fee is required for each application to the University of Kentucky Graduate School. The application cannot be submitted without payment of this fee.

NOTE: If you previously submitted an application for the College of Nursing PhD Program, you must now resubmit all materials through the Graduate School’s online application process.

ApplyYourself Application Process

Through the ApplyYourself Application Network: First you must set up a new account and establish a user name and password. Do not lose this information; you will need it if you wish to return to continue an unfinished application or review a completed application. Read this entire page regarding the process and requirements before you establish your new application.

This process is to be used ONLY by PhD applicants. Applicants to the DNP (clinical doctorate) program DO NOT apply through ApplyYourself.

To complete the ApplyYourself application, you will first need to gather several pieces of information, including the following:

A. Unofficial Transcripts The ApplyYourself application requires all applicants to upload unofficial transcripts of ALL previous colleges and universities they have attended; this includes the University of Kentucky. Failure to upload unofficial transcripts will result in an inability to complete and submit the online application.

To obtain a University of Kentucky transcript (unofficial or official) go to the registrar’s website for instructions:  http://www.uky.edu/registrar/transcripts (scroll all the way down for instructions on “unofficial transcripts.”)

B. Official Transcripts If you are offered admission and subsequently enroll in graduate school at the University of Kentucky, you will then be required to submit official transcripts to the Graduate School. Transcripts uploaded as part of the online process are NOT considered to be official. Official transcripts must be received by the University of Kentucky in a sealed envelope.

C. Test Scores All applicants whose native language is not English will be asked to self-report one of these scores as part of the online application. Submitted scores must be no more than two years old.

D. Letters of Recommendation You will be asked to supply contact information for the three recommendations required by the College of Nursing. At least one recommendation should come from a doctorally prepared faculty member.

E. Once your application has been submitted The system will automatically contact each person identified, and their recommendations will be submitted directly to us. You can, at any time, login to see who has submitted a recommendation.

Specific Application Requirements for the PhD in Nursing

Other materials to be uploaded as part of the complete online application process:

A. Curriculum Vitae (CV):  CV should include education, licensures, certifications, work experience, honors and awards, and any publications or presentations of which you were author or coauthor.

B. Personal Statement/Goal Statement:  In one to three double-spaced pages, discuss your reasons for seeking doctoral study, short- and long-term academic and career goals, and area of research interest. Provide a self-evaluation of your motivation, initiative and the potential for independent learning; include an example of leadership experience where initiative and self-motivation were important to success.

C. Writing Sample: Provide an example of scholarly written work that demonstrates excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly and logically.

Applicant Interviews

Applicants will be contacted by the College of Nursing to schedule interviews with two graduate faculty members once all required application materials and fees have been submitted.

Upon submission of all required application materials/credentials and completion of interviews with graduate faculty the PhD Curriculum/Admissions Committee will review the applicant file and make an official recommendation regarding admission to the PhD program in nursing at the University of Kentucky. Admission decisions are made on a competitive basis.

Nursing, DNP to PhD Pathway

A student being superimposed in front of a teal background.

Become a PhD Nurse Educator or Nurse Researcher

You're ready to take the next step in your nursing career—influencing professional nursing practice through teaching and research. IUP's Nursing PhD degree program will get you there.

Your skills and passion are in high demand. With the shortage of nursing faculty across the country, your doctorate in nursing can prepare you to meet this critical need. You'll use your experience and knowledge to help determine the future of patient care.

IUP has been awarded a Nurse Faculty Loan Program grant that provides up to 85% loan forgiveness for master’s and doctoral students who commit to work full-time for four years in nursing education.

Why earn your phd in nursing at iup.

Skilled nursing faculty and researchers are in demand in Pennsylvania and around the country. You want to be fully prepared to fill these sought-after jobs. At IUP you'll immerse yourself in a doctorate in nursing program grounded in:

  • Cutting-edge research that advances nursing education.
  • Instructional practices in nursing education.
  • Faculty and nursing leadership development.

What You'll Learn

Along with learning how to be an effective leader in a variety of educational settings, you'll also gain valuable skills in how to conduct nursing education research that can make a difference beyond the classroom. Combined with your professional experience, you'll make your mark as a respected nurse educator and scholar.

Already Have a Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree?

Do you already have a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree but want to pursue a PhD also? IUP has a unique DNP to PhD program that puts prior work from your DNP program toward a shortened PhD curriculum.

Imagine Your Future

Do you see yourself leading classes of aspiring nurses? Colleges and universities in Pennsylvania and across the US are looking for nurse professionals like you who have a doctorate in nursing. You can choose whether to teach at a small college, a large research university, or anywhere in between.

Maybe you're interested in working on research projects to advance knowledge within your discipline—to shape nursing instruction and potentially improve patient care outcomes.

Or do you envision taking on a more administrative role, like being in charge of nurse development in a hospital setting.

A combination of these roles may be the ideal way to tap into your goals and make the most of your talents.

Armed with your PhD in Nursing from IUP, you'll create choices that will let you accomplish what you want.

Demand for Nurse Educators and Researchers

The 2022-23 Faculty Vacancy Report shows:

Nursing, DNP to PhD

Transition your dnp to a phd in record time.

With the unique Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at IUP, students will easily combine the skills and education gained throughout their DNP program with the knowledge and teaching abilities provided by a PhD degree. As students progress through this accelerated PhD program, they will encounter a shortened curriculum offered in a convenient timeframe that accommodates their professional schedule and academic needs.

Students enrolled in the program will gain knowledge in everything from curriculum evaluation in nursing to conducting various kinds of research necessary for teaching in the university-level nursing classroom. With PhD-level nursing faculty in high demand nationwide, the DNP to PhD program at IUP prepares you for a career as a professor of nursing in various academic settings, including colleges and universities. It is perfect for nurses who already have a DNP and who wish to obtain tenure-track faculty positions within a university setting.

What the DNP to PhD Program at IUP Can Offer You:

Complete your PhD in half the time. As 27 credits from a DNP degree transfer to this innovative PhD, coursework is completed in a highly accelerated format, requiring only 33 semester hours of graduate credits to complete the DNP to PhD degree as opposed to the 60 hours required by the traditional nursing PhD.

Students will build a supportive professional and academic network with other students in a cohort, progressing throughout the coursework as a group.

Heather Figi and FNU Dean for Inclusive Excellence and Student Success Dr. Paula Alexander-Delpech at the APNA National Conference

For FNU student Heather Figi, RN, BSN, life is about fulfilling two principles: “we are here to do great things with the gift of our lives” and “we are here to serve others.”

These beliefs empowered her to resume her education in 2011 with the aim of becoming a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. On track to graduate this year, Figi is currently pursuing her MSN in the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program at FNU. Drawing from her rich background in music and education, Figi intends to integrate these experiences with her healthcare education. She said she seeks to embody the essence of psychiatry, derived from its Greek roots, where “psukhē” denotes soul or mind, and “iatreia” signifies healing.

“With the education I am receiving from Frontier Nursing University, I plan to merge my background in the arts with healing to offer holistic, whole-person psychiatric care,” she said.

A resident of Janesville, Wisconsin, Figi currently serves as a psychiatric RN, primarily providing care for underserved populations. In her work, she seeks to offer dignity to patients while assessing and addressing unmet medical needs such as dental needs, wounds and injuries. She said many of her patients receive inpatient care at the area psychiatric hospital, and are in the acute phase of schizophrenia. Many of her patients also have substance use disorder and lack of housing.

In pursuing her degree at FNU, Figi said she seeks to alter perspectives, advocating for the brain to be regarded as neutrally as any other organ, thereby diminishing the stigma surrounding mental health. She said her favorite subject she has studied at FNU thus far has been psychopharmacology due to the way in which instructors weave together the brain with biological mechanisms and symptomatology.

APNA National Conference

Figi said FNU has offered the structure and flexibility to allow her to reach her goals.

“I feel that through the structure of this program , FNU honors nursing professionals by accommodating them for individualized plans that allow for life to happen, trajectories to change and lots of personal guidance along the way,” she said.

Figi said FNU has also been a catalyst for professional development, particularly through the Professional Organizational Mentoring Program (POMP) , which matches FNU faculty with nurse practitioner and nurse-midwifery students from underrepresented groups to provide support and mentorship. The program allows students to join a professional organization in their field and gives them the opportunity to attend a professional conference with their mentors. Figi attended the APNA National Conference with Dr. Paula Alexander-Delpech.

“I deeply valued attending the national conference, connecting with one of the stunning faculty members here at FNU, and getting to pick her brain, have fun and share some dessert,” she said. “I had several degrees before coming to FNU and have never felt as supported as I have with the POMP opportunity.”

When she is not at work or pursuing coursework at FNU, Figi enjoys taking walks, pursuing HIIT and capoeira exercise, singing, drawing and spending time with her nephews and niece.

Thank you, Heather, for your work with underserved populations and for your ongoing commitment to expanding your impact through education at FNU.

Since 2015, Marisa has led Infinite Flow to perform at over 160 events, from large global events to local school assemblies & community festivals. Heading the creative & artistic direction, Infinite Flow’s videos have tracked over 100 million views on Facebook alone. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Marisa spearheaded Infinite Flow to turn its in-person elementary school assembly program into a virtual program, launching Scoops of Inclusion, a 47-minute short film celebrating diversity and empowering kids to take an active role in creating a more inclusive world where we each feel we belong.

Lucero, Robert J. PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN

Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Professor of Nursing, and Audrienne H. Moseley Endowed Chair in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

University of California, Los Angeles, School of Nursing

My research program focuses on improving health outcomes of vulnerable populations using innovative health systems and informatics approaches. Two prominent themes of my work are: enhancing the quality of care for hospitalized older adults and improving self-management of chronic health conditions among Hispanic, African-American, and LGBTQ+ populations. My research is distinguished by interdisciplinary team science, which bridges nursing, medicine, psychology, computer science, and engineering, health systems, communities, and other academic institutions.

My research is leading the way to inform infrastructure development for data-driven knowledge generation that serves as a model for organizations across the United States (US) to improve the quality of care for hospitalized older adults. I am leveraging electronic patient, clinical, and administrative data and data science methods to identify valid, modifiable factors that predict hospital-acquired falls (HAF), which affect annually approximately one million US hospitalized patients. Studies I have published show that, in 168 US hospitals, poor nursing care quality was associated with more adverse patient events, including HAF. Using artificial intelligence approaches with electronic health record (EHR) data, I have discovered a set of six new clinical and organizational factors that can predict HAF. These findings were among the most downloaded in 2019, and have widespread implications since hospital patient falls continue to be a significant clinical concern internationally in healthcare systems. My lab also explores the use of registered nurses’ (RNs’) progress notes, or text data on patient observations, to predict HAF. We were the first to publish that RNs’ notes contain information about clinical, environmental, and organizational factors that can predict fall risk. I am Principal Investigator (PI) of a 5-year $2.57 million award from the National Institute on Aging. This cutting-edge health systems project is exploiting the use of text and structured EHR data to validate predictors of HAF and hospital-induced delirium. This study will expand the University of Florida Health EHR research infrastructure for data-driven knowledge generation.

The other cornerstone of my research program is developing health information technology (HIT) to promote chronic disease self-management. I pioneered and published a HIT design approach, known as Consumer-centered Participatory Design (C2 PD). Unlike other design approaches, C2 PD provides public health and community-based organizations, academic researchers, and commercial designers with a theoretically informed approach that engages consumers throughout the development and evaluation of HIT. C2 PD builds on the strengths and resources within a community, promotes a collaborative learning and empowering process, facilitates collaborative partnerships, and incorporates four components of HIT design, namely; user preferences, functions, tasks, and representational requirements, to develop highly usable systems. We introduced this innovative approach and presented our findings to informaticians at the International Medical Informatics Association Nursing Informatics Congress in 2012. We demonstrated that using the C2 PD approach resulted in a highly useful and usable fall prevention self-management system for English- and Spanish-speaking older adults. Since then, multiple investigators of HIT development and systematic review articles have referenced the use of the C2 PD approach. The C2 PD approach has been the basis of my other funded studies, including a $2.8 million National Institute of Nursing Research and $1.0 million Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality award. I have disseminated further wide-ranging use of the C2 PD method, including creating a mobile Health (mHealth) application (app) interface for Hispanic caregivers of persons with dementia to self-manage chronic stress and burden and an mHealth app to support African American caregivers of children with chronic asthma and obesity. The lessons I learned developing the C2 PD approach are represented in a paper I co-authored that focuses on using HIT to engage communities to improve health and reduce health disparities in populations. This is significant to the work I am conducting among people living with HIV. A study I published showed that a large proportion (85.5%) of people living with HIV are interested in using a mHealth app that supports HIV self-management, including functions to identify health services, provide health tips and medication reminders, communicate with healthcare providers, track their mood and emotions, and engage in social networking. My lab is expanding this research with funding from the Health Services and Resources Administration (HRSA) and the Florida Department of Public Health to inform creating and testing a technology-enabled self-management intervention.

I have developed an independent and externally funded health services and informatics research program of over $8.85 million as PI. I publish in high impact journals and researchers and scholars in nursing, health services, and informatics cite my research regularly according to citation analytics (>1024, h-index:14, i10-index:18). Additionally, federal government agencies have recognized my research. I was a standing member of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality HIT Research review panel from 2016-2020, and served on multiple NIH Special Emphasis Review Panels. My peers have recognized the impact of my research nationally, and I am disseminating my research program internationally. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the New York Academy of Medicine. In 2019, I received a 3-year UF Term Professorship that acknowledged my academic accomplishments in shaping the UF College of Nursing and the nursing discipline. I am currently the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Professor of Nursing (with tenure); and, the Adrienne H. Mosely Endowed Chair in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Nursing.

Born in Orange, California and raised in the beautiful state of Oregon, Rebekka Eshler has had an adventurous life. Being raised by her wonderful grandmother, she learned valuable life lessons earlier than her peers. After graduating high school and a few confusing years in college, Rebekka decided it was time to make a change and decided to join the United States Army and becoming a Fire Support Specialist Paratrooper. Rebekka was stationed all the way up in the last frontier state of Alaska. Even before transitioning, she was embraced by the LGBTQIA’s community.

After leaving the service, Rebekka delayed her transition as she started her professional piloting career at University of Alaska Anchorage. After many nights of deep thought and struggle, Rebekka decided that she loved helping people and redirected her efforts towards a Political Science Degree. She also took biology and chemistry classes because she fell in love with medicine after becoming an Emergency Medical Technician. While at UAA Rebekka’s passion for helping others and leadership got even stronger. She was participated in many different student leadership organization and even became the Student Veterans of America Chapter President at UAA. Rebekka also began working as a volunteer for the Non Governmental Organization Mobile Medics International, that provides medical response to natural disasters and humanitarian crises around the world.

After coming out as a proud trans woman in 2018, Rebekka began reconnecting with her local LGBTQIA community in Anchorage. She began being a major voice for the LGBTQIA Community in her final year of college. From being the first openly transgender SVA UAA Chapter President, to working at the homeless shelter as an EMT, Rebekka wasn’t afraid to speak up and make sure that everyone was receiving equal treatment. After Graduating in 2020, during the pandemic, Rebekka decided it was time to be more active and joined the board of Transgender American Veteran Association as the Director of Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations. In this role she built relationships with other Veteran organizations and LGBTQIA organizations.

Rebekka represented her state as Miss Trans Alaska 2022 and won Miss Congeniality at the national Miss Trans USA 2022 pageant. She is currently serving as the National President of The Transgender American Veteran Association.

Seminar sessions offer career prep for MS-IS students

Master of information systems students hear from industry professionals.

The recent fall and spring semesters offered students enrolled in Lindner's Master of Science in information systems (MS-IS) program the opportunity to connect their academic learnings with the realities of the business world.

In lieu of traditional classroom instruction, the students gathered on Fridays for a seminar class that featured company representatives showcasing applications of information systems in the real world, the qualities sought by companies in their employees and/or a challenge facing the company or its industry.

MS-IS Program Director Rob Rokey noted that the format, length and topic of the seminar sessions is up to the company representative. Students also practice networking and other soft skills during this time.

Kevin Thomas, staff technical product manager, GE Aerospace, BBA, BS ’19, chose to convey the “importance of real-world experience” during his spring semester address. This was Thomas’ third academic year presenting to MS-IS students.

“There is nothing that can replicate hands-on work, and the University of Cincinnati continues to have a cutting-edge experiential learning program ,” said Thomas, who fulfilled four co-op rotations with GE Aerospace before joining the company full-time in 2019. “I hope the students take advantage of the opportunities the university and businesses in the Cincinnati region provide to enhance their education and make themselves stand out among other applicants as they graduate and begin the next chapter of their journey.”

Shreyas Nadig, MS ’24, said that the Friday seminars are one of the many “extra steps” the MS-IS program takes to assist students with networking-building, as well as providing exposure to different industries.

“Companies from finance, ed-tech, retail, consumer packaged goods and many other industries participated, and the speakers come with great knowledge and enthusiasm to share their experiences with us,” said Nadig, recently recognized as Outstanding MS-IS Student of the Year at the Lindner Student Awards . “This is a great way to stay connected with the current trends, and it has personally helped me route my focus towards my career goals.”

Thomas said his favorite part of the seminar is the Q&A session, offering examples of what he has heard from students in the past.

  • “Sharing your real-world product owner experience helped me understand what someone in this role does and if that type of job would be a good fit for me.”
  • “I was familiar with GE Aerospace. However, I thought you only made engines. It was great to learn more about the company, including your work in the wider aerospace and defense industry.”
  • “Thank you for sharing insights into what it is like to work in technology in a non-digital technology company. I have a better idea of what ‘a day in the life’ looks like.”

During the 2022-23 academic year, MS-IS students surveyed three months after graduation reported a mean starting salary of $106,264. Rokey said that students enter the MS-IS program — which requires a bachelor’s degree in any discipline to be considered for entry — for a range of practical reasons.

“What I hear all the time from students is that they come because of the mix of business and technical subjects. They come because of our faculty, and, of course, they come because of our emphasis on experiential learning.”
